Natbagger's Boat
Natbagger’s Boat Made to order (may take a few weeks depending on charms chosen, message me if you need it for a particular date)
Verb: To Natbag. To be a natbagger. Natbagging (a habit)
The collection of natural items put in one’s pocket to be taken home or elsewhere. Often instinctive. Items such as shells, acorns, conkers, pine cones, sea glass, feathers, pebbles, seeds, butterfly wings, bones…
Here is a beautiful hand beaten copper boat complete with charms from nature that can reflect the seasons or your passions to hold your precious nature finds, or just something beautiful to hang in your window.
Choose from 3 or 7 charms boats or contact me if you would like a custom made boat with some charms that have significance to you.
As children we have nature tables but this often stops as we grow. I think adults need them too, so I had an idea to do a big moon boat like this one, with a chain on which to hang different charms as the year turns. They have split rings so they can be taken on and off. Individual charms can be bought and added and swapped as the mood takes you. You can collect the individual ones that speak to you or you can attach shells or feathers or hag stones; your own beautiful treasures found on your travels and walks. You can place precious finds in the boat as it sails through the year. A bit like a nature table for grown ups. The dangling charms can also be worn as pendants or clipped on to a bag or used as treasured Christmas decorations, to come out and shine at their time of year.
The act of walking and noticing the small changes in the landscape around you, even in waste ground there is beauty with ‘weeds’ and fallen feathers and such, is healing and calming I find. It helps me notice the seasons turning and really live in the natural world rather than blindly wandering on the edge.
The boat comes with a copper wire to hang it up in a window, or above your bed, or a special corner.
Your boat has been hand folded and beaten into shape by myself from a single piece of pure copper. It takes time to beat and fire and then polish and each one is unique with hammer marks. If you look closely, you might find the symbols of the moon on there to mark the turnings of the year.
I discovered the term Natbagging was coined by Ginny Battson. Do have a look at her Neologisms, they are most wonderful She is an eco linguist of all wonderful things. You can find out more about her here and huge thanks to her for coming up with such a wonderful phrase.
